Professor Park Sung-soo, a professor of gastroenterology surgery at Anam University Hospital affiliated with South Korea University, revealed the main factors that increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.
The doctor said in an interview with the Russian news agency Novosti: "Stomach cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in South Korea, as the National Cancer Registry for 2023 indicates that it is among the top five most diagnosed cancers in the country."
He added: "Our analysis showed that infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria increases the risk of stomach cancer by about double, while excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk by 1.5 to 2.2 times, a diet rich in salt and pickled foods by 1.4 to 2 times, and smoking increases the risk by about 1.3 to 1.8 times."
The doctor pointed out that the consumption of refined grains, red meat, processed meats, and high-fat dairy products are also factors that increase the likelihood of developing the disease.
It is reported that a team of scientists led by Professor Park Sung-soo analyzed 507 research papers from the international medical databases PubMed, Embase and Cochrane, and assessed the impact of 139 factors, including diet, lifestyle, environment, medications, infections and genetic characteristics, on the risk of developing and preventing stomach cancer.
