Lebanon: Mass exodus to Tyre following new Israeli threats

Faced with the deteriorating security situation, many families have chosen to flee the city in haste. Long lines of vehicles loaded with mattresses, luggage, everyday items, and sometimes pets have taken to the roads towards Sidon and other towns further north. This new wave of people comes as regional tensions escalate following the resumption of exchanges of fire involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran. Recent strikes have already caused casualties and significant damage in several areas of southern Lebanon, fueling fears of further escalation. In the historic Christian quarter of Tyre, religious leaders called on the international community to intervene quickly after Israeli air raid warnings were extended to areas that had previously been relatively unaffected. For many residents, the expansion of these alerts has heightened their sense of insecurity and accelerated their departures. According to Lebanese authorities, the conflict has already claimed approximately 3,500 lives and displaced more than 1.2 million people across the country. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, Tyre is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. But in recent weeks, the destruction caused by bombing has deeply scarred the port city. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their destination and the conditions of their arrival, many residents now feel they have no other choice but to leave.
