Mauritius: The Public Prosecutor's Office appeals in the Ramgoolam safe deposit box case

In Mauritius, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions has appealed the Intermediate Court's decision to dismiss the case concerning the safe deposit boxes belonging to Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. The prosecution argues that "the verdict delivered on Monday is legally flawed."

The case was opened after Ramgoolam's defeat in the 2014 elections. An investigation uncovered the equivalent of 3.62 million euros in a safe at his home.

He was then prosecuted for cash payments made between 2009 and 2015. This practice was contrary to the anti-money laundering law in force in the island country.

But the procedure remained suspended until Navin Ramgoolam's return to the head of government in 2024.
