Tunisia: Protesters demand the expulsion of undocumented

Protesters gathered on Saturday outside the headquarters of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Tunis to demand the expulsion of undocumented immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

The protesters also demanded the departure of the UN agency from Tunisia.

Since the establishment of a cooperation agreement between the European Union and Tunisia in 2023, the country has become an important transit point for individuals wishing to reach Europe via the Mediterranean.

These sub-Saharan migrants face xenophobic rhetoric and risks of aggression, fueled by the conspiracy rhetoric of Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed.

“Western countries are lying when they claim that Tunisia is racist and keep hammering this claim until it becomes a reality,” said blogger and human rights activist Rim Moualhi.

"We welcome all visitors, but this is an enemy against which no tolerance can be shown, an enemy financed by Zionist and foreign funds," she added.

Criticism of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is not unique to Tunisia.

A similar demonstration brought together hundreds of Libyans on Thursday in front of the organization's headquarters in Tripoli.
