The Indonesian women's national volleyball team will face host Japan in the group stage of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after both teams were drawn in Pool A with Nepal.
Based on the volleyball draw results on the official website on Saturday, Indonesia is in a group of only three teams. Japan is the opponent with the strongest track record, having won the silver medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
In that edition, Japan advanced to the final before being defeated by China in straight sets. This result meant Japan failed to win an Asian Games gold medal for the first time since winning in Bangkok 1978.
Indonesia itself is returning to the women's volleyball event after not participating in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
The Red and White team's last appearance at the Asian Games occurred when Indonesia hosted the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games. At that time, Indonesia finished the competition in seventh place after defeating the Philippines 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20) in the seventh and eighth position classification matches.
The 2026 Asian Games will be an opportunity for the Indonesian women's team to improve on their 2018 performance and return to compete in Asia's biggest multi-sport event after missing the Hangzhou edition.
The women's volleyball competition at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games is scheduled to begin on September 16.
The women's volleyball tournament features 14 teams divided into four pools. Pool B features defending champion China, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Pool C contains Thailand, Taiwan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia, while Pool D is occupied by Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Qatar.
