the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed that 1,907 active and former ADF personnel died by suicide between 1997 and 2024, with 1,592 of them being former military personnel.
In the period from 1997 to 2024, the report stated that the suicide rate among former male military personnel was recorded at 30.5 deaths per 100,000 population, or 24 percent higher than that of men in the general population.
Meanwhile, the suicide rate among former female military personnel was recorded as 92 percent higher than that of the general female population, reaching 14.3 deaths per 100,000 residents.
When grouped into three-year intervals, the report states that suicide rates among both male and female former military personnel have decreased significantly.
The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which submitted its final report in 2024, found that one in three former ADF personnel experienced high to very high levels of psychological distress.
The commission made 122 recommendations, including urging the federal government to create a new agency to support veterans in transitioning from military to civilian life.
