The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries targets modernizing 950 fishing vessels by 2027

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries  is targeting the modernization of 950 fishing vessels by 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen the national fishing fleet.
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, quoted in a press statement in Jakarta on Thursday, said that modernizing fishing vessels is one of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' six national priority work programs in 2027.

"The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has been tasked with realizing the development and food sovereignty targets through six national priority programs," said Trenggono.

The modernization target is part of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' plan to modernize 4,582 vessels by 2029.

Ship modernization is said to be necessary to overcome a number of problems still faced by fishermen, including an aging fleet, limited technology, high operational costs, and inconsistent catch quality.

Modernization is also considered necessary to increase the competitiveness of the national fisheries sector.
