At its annual conference, the first under its new CEO John Ternos, Apple announced a range of new products.
Alongside the long-awaited foldable iPhone Duo, the company unveiled its new Apple Watch Series 12 smartwatch with AI-powered Siri assistant, amid growing privacy concerns.
The new watch offers two key features within what Apple calls "Audio Intelligence":
The first is Live Rewind: It allows the user to double-press the Digital Crown (the rotating part that protrudes on the side of the watch) to get a written transcript of the last 15 seconds of any conversation. This is a feature that Apple markets for those who want to remember a book recommendation, a colleague's idea, or information that they did not hear well.
The second is Siri Recap: It uses surround listening to capture summaries and key points from the user's daily conversations, and can be set to work always or at specific times.
Apple assures you that your privacy is protected, that recordings cannot be accessed by anyone, and that it is not recorded who said what.
But the real problem isn't you, it's those around you. If you're talking to a friend in a public place, and someone nearby is wearing this watch, your conversation could be recorded without your knowledge or consent.
This is exactly what happened with Meta's smart glasses, which were dubbed "pervert glasses" because people used them to secretly record others. Although the glasses have an LED warning light, some people managed to hide it.
Apple also did not clarify whether the Siri Recap feature would issue an audio alert similar to Live Rewind to inform those around that their conversations are being recorded and summarized.
Observers believe that Apple may face a wave of public anger when these features are introduced to the market, even though its privacy protection record is relatively better than other companies such as Meta.
