 US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had contacted his administration “directly” with the aim of reaching an agreement, expressing his hope that the United States was “heading towards the end of the war” with it.

This came in a statement to reporters as he disembarked from the plane in North Carolina on Wednesday evening.

Trump explained that the Iranian administration had contacted his administration directly in order to reach an agreement, indicating that Tehran wanted to reach an agreement.

When asked about the stage the United States had reached in the war, Trump said: “I hope we are heading towards the end of the war.”

He added: “Iran is very keen to reach an agreement, and we will see how this process ends.”

When asked whether the United States had received a message from Iran directly or through intermediaries, Trump confirmed that he had received it “directly.”

There was no immediate comment from the Iranian side on Trump's remarks.

On the other hand, the US president criticized the European Union's offer to Canada to become its first "associate member".

Trump threatened to impose “very large” tariffs on Europe or halt trade with it in many areas.

He continued: “If they proceed, and if I see any hostile action in this, I will impose very strict tariffs or stop trade with Europe in many areas.”

The US president described the European Union's offer to Canada as "ridiculous".

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during a session that also included Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that they want to pave the way for Canada to become the first “associate member” of the European Union.
