With Ukrainian drones targeting oil refineries, warehouses of major e-commerce companies and other Russian civilian facilities, Russian engineers have revived an experiment dating back to 1941.

At that time, balloon barriers protected Moscow's skies from German bombers, and they performed this task well. Now, the idea has been revived, based on modern technologies.
For example, to protect a large oil refinery, such as the one located in the Kaputnya district of Moscow, about ten balloons would be needed.
Currently, at a Russian testing ground, a barrier system based on two balloons, each with a capacity of 150 cubic meters, is being tested. The scene resembles an amusement park ride, where two "sky whales" ascend simultaneously to a specific height, connected by a cable from which special ropes dangle.
A spokesperson for Spets Radio, the balloon manufacturer, explained in an interview with the television news program Vesti: "So there are two balloons, with a cable stretched between them, from which special cords hang to provide protection." He added, "During World War I, such systems were called aprons, and then nets began to be used. It's a trap system for protecting critical installations located far from the front line."
The distance between the cables is one meter, which is sufficient to counter Ukrainian drones. During testing, a drone attempting to cross the tensioned barrier between two balloons collided with one of the cables, which then wrapped around its propeller, rendering it immobile, like a fly caught in a spider's web.
The expert explained that "this composite cable is stronger than steel and three or four times lighter, and can withstand pressure of up to 800 kilograms."
Several Russian companies simultaneously announced the development of balloon barriers, but only the research and production organization "Spets Radio" was able to demonstrate the operation of a fully operational system.
The expert pointed out the need for the system to work in conjunction with the "Gepard" radar system, explaining that the radars determine the drone's altitude, while the automated cranes correct the balloons' altitude, so that the cables become capable of intercepting the path of suicide drones.
