According to the official Anadolu news agency on Saturday, the seven suspects face serious charges including forgery of official documents, breach of trust, and illegal seizure of personal data.
The pre-trial detention orders included Ferhat Gundogdu, head of the Central Referees Committee of the Turkish Federation, and Emre Kochev, head of the Referees Committee of the Istanbul branch, in addition to three other defendants, while two others were released with judicial supervision measures imposed on them.
The investigations also included the detention of prominent referees in the local championship, including Premier League referee Yasin Kol and assistant referee GoktuÄŸ Hazar Eril.
These punitive developments came in the wake of simultaneous raids carried out by security services in Istanbul, Ankara and two other cities, based on financial intelligence reports, telephone records, witness statements and expert analyses.
The Central Referees Committee is responsible for organizing, appointing, and classifying referees to manage Turkish league matches, decisions that have long faced sharp criticism and accusations of bias from clubs and fans in the past.
This new upheaval comes just one year after the Turkish Football Federation suspended 149 referees for their involvement in illegal betting cases, while the Turkish Football Federation has not issued any official statement commenting on the latest detention measures up to the time of preparing this report.
