Magdi Abdel Ghani considered that signing players who had previously insulted the symbols of the Red Castle reflects a crisis in the standards for selecting the elements that wear the club's jersey.
Abdel Ghani's televised remarks came in response to Al-Khatib's comments about the need for players to be loyal to Al-Ahly Club, warning that a player who does not appreciate the value of the red jersey will not be immune to the consequences. The former team star believes that the language of threats is not appropriate for the reality of modern football, given the huge financial contracts that players receive.
Magdi Abdel Ghani said he was saddened by Al Ahly's declining performance, especially after the recent 3-3 draw against Al Qanah, noting that Al Khatib's message to the players regarding loyalty to the club reflects a generational difference in understanding the meaning of belonging.
He added that Al-Khatib belongs to a generation that was raised on loyalty to Al-Ahly, but he believes that the language of football has changed, and talking about spirit and belonging alone is no longer enough to guarantee the commitment of the players, in light of the large salaries and contracts they receive.
The former Al-Ahly star explained that a player who receives a contract worth 50, 70, 80 or 100 million pounds cannot be dealt with by threats alone, stressing that the club is required to set clear standards for selecting players and holding them accountable for their performance and commitment.
Abdel Ghani said in televised remarks: “Today the club has 50 languages, not just one. Unfortunately, there is the language of those who love money and we signed with them, and there is the language of those who don’t know how to play football and we also signed with them, and the language of those who don’t know the value of the club and we brought them in, and the language of those who insulted us and we also signed with them.”
Abdel Ghani’s statements regarding the signing of a player who had previously insulted Al-Ahly’s icons refer to Imam Ashour, a player on the team, who had a video clip before joining the Red Castle in which he appeared directing insults at the club’s icons, while interacting with Zamalek fans.
The incident sparked widespread controversy at the time, before the player moved to Al-Ahly, and it resurfaced with Abdel Ghani's criticism of the way players were chosen and the extent of their respect for the club, its history and its symbols.
In a related context, Al-Ahly's technical staff excluded Imam Ashour from the team's roster that is preparing to face Uganda's Kitara in the second leg of the preliminary round of the African Confederation Cup, scheduled for today, Sunday, at Cairo International Stadium.
Al Ahly had won against Kitara in the first leg (2-1) in Uganda, so they need to win or draw with any score in the second leg in order to secure qualification to the group stage and continue their journey in the continental championship.
