Is Nicaragua's "Mouth of Hell" awakening? Hidden activity detected beneath the volcano

Scientists have revealed changes inside Nicaragua's "Mouth of Hell" volcano, indicating more complex magma reservoirs than previously thought, with no signs of an imminent eruption.

Masaya volcano is located about 20 kilometers from the capital Managua, and attracts thousands of tourists annually to see the lava lake in the Santiago crater.

Scientists from Pennsylvania State University analyzed data from the Sentinel-1 satellite, which monitors changes on the Earth's surface, to track the movement of magma beneath the volcano.

The data showed that the land surrounding the main magma reservoir dropped by about 3 centimeters between 2018 and mid-2022, before rising again until 2024, indicating the possibility of magma escaping from the reservoir and then returning to it.

In contrast, the ground surface near the Santiago crater continued to sink throughout the same period, which suggests the existence of another magma reservoir about 200 meters underground.

Lead researcher Lizzie Johnson said that understanding the nature of volcanic activity and the risks associated with it is crucial, especially since the volcano releases gases that can reach dangerous concentrations.

Although the last major lava flow dates back to 1772, the volcano has experienced several eruptions over the past five decades.

Scientists emphasize that the results do not indicate an imminent eruption, but they hope that continued monitoring will help understand the volcano's activity and detect any changes that might warrant warning residents in a timely manner.
