"The voices of local communities have so far been overlooked by the media. Going forward, they must be encouraged to surface, become national issues, and become the subject of development," Yorrys said in his statement at the opening of the Journalism Workshop and Training entitled "Guarding Aspirations, Disseminating Information".
Yorrys stated that the DPD RI leadership has been paying attention to reporting on regional issues since the beginning of the 2024-2029 term. He believes that various public aspirations need to be communicated more widely so that they are not only addressed locally but also considered in national policy discussions.
He emphasized that the slogan "From the Regions for Indonesia" must be realized through efforts to raise regional issues as a shared concern, not just as a ceremonial slogan.
The senator from Central Papua also highlighted the challenges of disseminating information amid the rapid growth of social media. The rapid flow of information exposes the public to a variety of unverified news, including false information that can attract public attention.
Therefore, Yorrys believes that improving journalistic skills within the DPD RI is necessary so that institutional information conveyed to the public is accurate, verified, and accountable.
He hopes that the training will equip participants with the ability to sort information, check the accuracy of data and compile news reports according to journalistic principles.
"I hope all participants will participate effectively and benefit from this series of activities. Let's use this activity as a platform to enrich our knowledge base and improve our journalistic skills, enabling us to make a significant contribution to improving the quality of DPD RI reporting," he said.
