Genetics or lifestyle? Which has a greater influence on longevity director of the medical institute at the university, said: "We studied several wild fruits that grow in the northern regions of Russia, such as blueberries, bearberries, and cranberries, as they contain polyphenols, substances produced by plants to protect against ultraviolet radiation, pests, and diseases. Experiments have shown that these substances are able to slow down cell aging and the development of tissue fibrosis."
She added: "Recent studies have confirmed many of the key biological effects of polyphenols, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, regulation of several metabolic processes, antimicrobial and cancer-preventive effects, and others."
According to the scientist, the process of tissue fibrosis, that is, the replacement of normal tissue with scar tissue, is most common in the lungs, liver, and kidneys, as well as the intestinal wall and the heart. These organs are most susceptible to chronic inflammation, oxygen deficiency, or mechanical damage, and scarring is particularly dangerous in them. Therefore, natural polyphenol compounds may become the basis for treating cell damage in these important organs of the body.
