The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported: "Israeli occupation aircraft targeted three locations in the countryside of Latakia and Tartous provinces on Friday evening," adding that "the Israeli raids targeted the surroundings of the villages of Zama and Burj Islam (in the Latakia countryside), leading to the death of a civilian and the injury of three others in the village of Zama (north of Latakia city)."
The agency added: "An Israeli raid also targeted the vicinity of Tartous port," noting that "the Israeli raids also resulted in material damage to the targeted sites."
In turn, the Israeli occupation army said in a statement: "Warplanes raided weapons depots in the Latakia region of Syria a short while ago." The army claimed that the depots "contained surface-to-sea missiles that posed a threat to the freedom of international and Israeli maritime navigation."
He added, "Surface-to-air missile platforms were also targeted in the Latakia region."
On May 14, Trump met with his Syrian counterpart, Al-Sharaa, in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. This was the first public meeting between the two leaders as part of a Gulf tour that included Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
On May 3, the Israeli military said it had struck dozens of targets in Syria with 12 warplanes, including anti-aircraft guns and a surface-to-air missile launcher. On May 7, the Syrian president revealed that Damascus was conducting "indirect negotiations" with Tel Aviv.
"We are conducting indirect negotiations with Israel through mediators to calm the situation so that it does not reach a point where both sides lose control," Sharaa said during a press conference with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, in Paris.
He stressed that Israel must "stop its arbitrary actions and interference in Syrian affairs," adding that he had spoken with all parties to confirm that "Syria is committed to the 1974 agreement," referring to the disengagement agreement with Israel.
The new Syrian administration, headed by Sharaa, has not threatened Israel in any way. Nevertheless, since the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime in late 2024, Tel Aviv has launched airstrikes on Syria, killing civilians and destroying Syrian military sites, vehicles, and ammunition.
Since 1967, Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights. Taking advantage of the new situation following the ouster of Assad, it occupied the Syrian buffer zone and declared the disengagement agreement between the two sides to be over.
