AI helps address the shortage of medical personnel in Indonesia

Philips Indonesia President Director Astri Ramayanti Dharmawan said that artificial intelligence (AI) can help address the high demand for and shortage of specialist medical personnel in Indonesia if it is used appropriately, transparently, and designed in an inclusive and wise manner.

"AI has tremendous potential to improve access to services, shorten waiting times, and ease the burden on medical personnel," Astri said at a media briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Astri said that currently Indonesia is only able to produce around 2,700 new specialist doctors per year, while the national need has reached 29,000.

This imbalance has resulted in 77 percent of patients reporting long waiting times to see a specialist, as reported in the Future Health Index 2025 report compiled by Philips.

The report found that one in three patients, or 33 percent, reported experiencing delays in receiving general care. Another 51 percent reported experiencing worsening health conditions due to not accessing healthcare services promptly.
