Tijuana, May 2. Since the end of Title 42 in the United States, between May 12, 2023, and April 17 of this year, the government of the neighboring country has expelled 690,000 people to 170 different countries, and only 20 percent of those seeking asylum in the United States have been granted it, as confirmed by the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Luis Miranda.

In a virtual press conference, Miranda stated: “It is important to recognize that we have seen a high migratory flow in the last three years, but also a majority of those people who have arrived in the United States or who have tried to cross illegally have already been deported , removed, or expelled to Mexico or their countries of origin.”

According to the undersecretary, a significant increase in the number of people crossing or attempting to cross irregularly into the United States was noted in December 2023, with the first five months of this year showing a reduction in the migratory flow.

Elections

During the recent elections in the United States and Mexico, the flow of migrants has increased (the two largest migrant caravans Tijuana has seen were in 2018 and 2020), so Miranda was questioned about the actions the United States government will take during the remainder of 2024.

He also mentioned that they have been monitoring the misinformation spreading on social media platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok about the supposed full opening of the border, and are therefore reaching out to the media to raise awareness about the various processes and repercussions of crossing into the United States illegally.
