All iPhone 17 models will reportedly be manufactured in India, and for the first time, shipments to the United States market from day one of launch will be entirely from the country.
As reported by Endgadget on Wednesday, this move aligns with Apple's efforts to reduce its dependence on China for device production for the global market. Apple has currently expanded its production capacity at five factories in India, including two new facilities that have recently become operational.
The Tata Group, a Mumbai-based multinational conglomerate, is expected to account for up to half of India's total iPhone production within the next two years. Apple's longtime partner, Foxconn Technology Group, is also involved through its Bangalore production center.
The iPhone 17 is expected to be launched in September 2025, although an exact date has not been announced. The lineup is likely to include the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, as well as rumors of a thinner premium model called the iPhone Air. Meanwhile, the affordable iPhone 17e is expected to arrive in early 2026.
On the other hand, United States trade policy also impacts Apple's production strategy. President Donald Trump's administration previously threatened to impose additional tariffs on iPhones if production remained concentrated overseas.
However, Apple recently announced plans to invest $100 billion in the United States as part of a domestic manufacturing program that is part of a total long-term investment of $600 billion.
Although India is also among the countries affected by US trade tariffs, it has been reported that iPhones made in India have so far avoided additional import duties. This situation has encouraged Apple to maximize device shipments to the US from India, at least temporarily.
