Oculoplasty, or eye plastic surgery, is not merely an aesthetic procedure, but also an important medical procedure for treating various disorders in the eye area, including eyelid abnormalities, tear duct disorders, and changes in shape due to trauma.
Ophthalmologist Subspecializing in Orbital, Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery from JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics, Dr. Dyah Tjintya Sarika, SpM, explained that one of the conditions often treated through this procedure is blepharoptosis or ptosis, which is a condition where the eyelid droops to the point of covering the pupil and impairing vision.
"Ptosis is divided into three types: congenital (present from birth), involutional (due to aging), and neurogenic (due to nerve or muscle disorders). If left untreated, this condition can impact vision quality," said Dyah during a JEC Eye Talks discussion in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to Dyah, ptosis treatment is carried out by adjusting the position of the eyelid to conform to normal visual field standards.
