Mexico City, September 22.- When Senator Lily Téllez , “ histrionic ,” left the lectern to try to hand a copy of The Godfather to the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez turned away.
The former television host stood for a while with the book in her hand, posed for the photo , enjoyed the flashes but failed to get the official to fall for the provocation and had to leave her book on the table in the Senate chamber .
It was his moment of glory , with a speech he never stopped reading while pounding his fist on the lectern or extending his finger to point .
His final gesture, he said, was to illustrate the alliance between political power and crime . He discredited the National Guard, calling it " the most expensive group of aides in the country ."
In the presidium, without making a single gesture, sitting next to the head of Security and Citizen Protection, the general secretary of National Defense , Luis Crescencio Sandoval , listened to the questions about the " hugs, not bullets " policy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador .
Rosa Icela Rodríguez 's appearance as coordinator of security policy also brought together the heads of the Ministry of Defense and the Navy , the Secretary of the Interior , Adán Augusto López , and even Santiago Nieto , head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF).
"Traitor! Traitor! " Senator Lucía Trasviña shouted at Téllez , without the now PAN member flinching. She recalled that 102 politicians were murdered during the last election , 68 activists , and an average of 10 women die every day .
The official responded that " hugs, not bullets , do not mean crossed arms ." She defended the paradigm shift in the policy to combat crime, which is based on trying to modify the causes of violence.
