The doctor explains that green and black tea are extracted from the same plant, differing only in the degree of fermentation. She said, "Green tea contains a higher percentage of antioxidants , specifically catechins, known for their anti-inflammatory and metabolism-enhancing properties. Black tea, on the other hand, is richer in other compounds such as theaflavins , which are produced during the fermentation process and also possess antioxidant properties, often being gentler on the stomach."
She added that the health benefits of tea depend not only on its type, but also on its concentration, temperature, and quantity within the diet.
She warned that strong tea, regardless of the type, can irritate the stomach, especially when consumed on an empty stomach , due to its high tannin content, which can cause heartburn and hinder iron absorption. Green tea is often more problematic for sensitive stomachs in this case.
She pointed out that the most important thing is to choose the type of tea that the person prefers and tolerates best, explaining that moderation and the individual body's response are the two most important factors, not just pursuing the alleged benefits of green tea.
