Prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of cataracts... Tips for protection

Ophthalmologist Yulia Kokharskaya stated that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation is a risk factor for developing cataracts and other eye diseases.

According to her, bright sunlight increases the risk of developing cataracts, and the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation can accumulate over time, so it is essential to use high-quality sunglasses to protect your eyesight.

The doctor pointed out that solar activity usually increases during the month of May, which makes prolonged exposure to sunlight, in the absence of appropriate protection, a cause of eye strain, increased sensitivity to light and discomfort, as well as a higher risk of developing a number of serious diseases in the long term.

She said: “Not all sunglasses are suitable for all conditions. For example, Category 2 sunglasses are ideal for everyday use in the city, as they help reduce eye strain while providing adequate protection. If you plan to spend a long time at the beach or in open spaces, Category 3 sunglasses are recommended. Category 4 sunglasses, which are the most intense, are reserved for extreme conditions only, such as high altitudes, snowy slopes, or prolonged exposure to open water.”

She added that choosing the right lens tint shade during the summer, when the sun's rays are at their peak, is extremely important.

She continued: “The choice of lens material is not limited to personal comfort factors, but also includes practical safety aspects. Glass lenses provide the best optical quality, but are heavier and more prone to breakage when subjected to impacts, while plastic lenses are lighter and less expensive, but less scratch-resistant.”
