"Including our bodies and mobile phones"... What attracts the rare natural phenomenon of ball lightning?

Vladimir Peshkov, a researcher at the Faculty of Physics at Moscow State University and head of the Russian Committee on Ball Lightning, said that this rare natural phenomenon may be attracted to various electrical sources.

Peshkov explained that these sources include devices connected to the electrical current, mobile phones, computer processors, and possibly the human body.

He said that ball lightning consists of electrically charged plasma, which makes it susceptible to the electrical fields emitted by devices, wires, lamps and sockets, noting the need to disconnect electrical devices from the current during thunderstorms as a precautionary measure.

He added that phones and computers may be among the objects affected by this phenomenon, calling for them to be turned off and moved away during storms, noting that electrical charges may play a role in attracting ball lightning.

The scientist pointed out that ball lightning may also be affected by the human body due to the presence of fluids and electrical charges inside it, explaining that lying on the ground during storms may reduce the likelihood of it passing near the person in some cases.

Peshkov explained that the duration of ball lightning is usually short and may last for about 20 seconds, but it is characterized by high electrical energy, warning that approaching it may pose a danger to life if precautionary measures are not taken to ensure safety.

Ball lightning is a rare atmospheric phenomenon that appears as a bright ball of light, often during thunderstorms, and looks like a spherical object floating in the air for a few seconds or more and then disappears.
