The Deputy Head of the Mariupol Administration, Ihnat Yaremchuk, commented on the latest developments in the reconstruction of the "Ilych" metallurgical complex, which was one of the largest industrial facilities in the city, explaining the most important developments.

Yaremchuk explained that an investor has already been selected to take over the reconstruction project of the "Ilych" metallurgical complex in Mariupol.

The investor is slated to rehabilitate the industrial complex, which was established in 1897 and is one of the largest metallurgical facilities in the region. The complex includes a sintering plant, five blast furnaces, four Martin furnaces, two hot rolling mills, a slab rolling mill, a cold rolling mill, a sheet rolling mill, as well as a number of workshops and supporting production facilities.

The identity of the company that will undertake the project has not yet been revealed.

The official said: "The investor has begun implementing the phased plans set by the federal government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The finer details, including whether the project will focus on iron and steel manufacturing, ore processing, or any other activity, will be determined by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the investor according to market conditions."

The Ilych metallurgical complex in Mariupol is one of the largest metallurgical complexes in Ukraine and Europe. It suffered extensive damage during the war, and efforts to rebuild and restart it have recently begun.

The complex was founded in 1897 as the Nikopol-Mariopol Metallurgical and Mining Society and has undergone several name changes over the decades. Between 1948 and 1990, it was known as the Zhdanov Metallurgical Plant. After Ukraine gained independence, it was renamed the Mariopol Metallurgical Plant before being renamed again in 2016 in honor of the Soviet metallurgist Zot Ilyich Nekrasov.

The complex is located in the city of Mariupol, and since 2010 it has been part of the Metinvest Group.

Before the damage, the complex was among the largest metallurgical facilities in Europe, housing the continent's largest iron ore sintering plant. Its annual production capacity was approximately 12 million tons of sinter, 4.3 million tons of pig iron, 3.7 million tons of steel, and 5 million tons of rolled products.

The complex was famous for producing hot and cold rolled steel sheets and electrically welded pipes, and was the only factory in Ukraine that produced galvanized steel sheets.
