The World Boxing Association (WBA) has named David Jimenez the WBA super flyweight (52.1 kg) world champion after Jesse Rodriguez vacated the title to move up to the bantamweight (53.5 kg) division.
"Jimenez held the interim title and was later elevated to full champion in recognition of his accomplishments and stature in the sport," the WBA said in a statement on its official website, which was monitored.
The title previously belonged to Jesse Rodriguez. However, the American boxer decided to leave the super flyweight division and continue his career at bantamweight.
The decision was made after Rodriguez managed to dominate the competition in the super flyweight class by collecting a number of big wins and uniting several world championship titles.
With Rodriguez's move up to bantamweight, David Jimenez officially becomes the new WBA super flyweight world champion. The Costa Rican boxer previously held interim title after his landmark victory over John Ramirez in April 2024.
Throughout her professional career, Jimenez has built a reputation as one of the best boxers in Latin America. Nicknamed "Medallita," she has amassed several notable victories over quality opponents, including Ricardo Rafael Sandoval and former world champion Ganigan Lopez.
