Binational projects to clean up the Tijuana River are historic: Ávila Olmeda

Tijuana, August 25. Official bodies from Mexico and the United States will invest $474 million to clean up the Tijuana River and prevent wastewater from seeping into the oceans of both countries, announced Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda.

They contemplate actions such as the modernization of the International Treatment Plant, the creation of collectors to treat water in the eastern part of Tijuana, and the development of a wastewater treatment plant in the San Antonio de los Buenos area, according to the announcement.

According to the governor, Minute 328 of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), signed on August 18, involves a binational investment that "demonstrates the interest of both governments in providing a definitive solution to a long-standing problem."

He stated that the act immediately consolidates infrastructure projects in the Tijuana River basin and also includes long-term public policies for water sanitation, which is the most important resource available to society.
