Tijuana, August 9.- Registration of cars with foreign license plates brought into the country illegally will begin in Baja California starting in September , President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced at his morning press conference this Monday.
He recalled that in Tijuana he made the commitment to regularization , and argued that it is for security reasons , since those cars are used to commit crimes "and there must be control," and for economic reasons since people "can't afford" to buy one from a dealership and it is a necessary means to carry out their daily activities.
He said an agreement will be sought "so that agencies are not affected" ; it's a border-wide plan that will be implemented before the end of the year.
They will submit a proposal to the Ministry of Economy
When asked by a reporter which vehicles would be included in the regularization, the president only responded that they were "irregular ones." However, on August 5, the director of the Institute of Vehicle Identity and Pollution Control (Invec), Alejandro Velasco Paredes, announced that a list would be submitted to the Ministry of Economy .
The state official warned on that same date that there are no intermediaries and that the agency he heads is the only one responsible for registering foreign vehicles, thereby discrediting the civil organizations that insist on issuing stickers for which they charge and claim are sufficient for transit through the state.
2012 and older models, not luxury or sport
The proposal is to include vehicles model years 2012 and older, and those that are not sports or luxury vehicles; they will be issued with a border license plate and permit.
If they are brought into the center of the country, they must be temporarily imported through the Tax Administration System (SAT).
As of last June, 35,800 units had been registered, but it is estimated that between 600,000 and 800,000 foreign units are circulating in the state, according to a statement by the Secretary of Sustainable Economy and Tourism, Mario Escobedo Carignan.
