Mexico City, October 19.- Senate President Olga Sánchez Cordero said that although it is not an easy task, as they will have to overcome "formalistic obstacles from the past, the comprehensive legalization of marijuana must be approved during this session ."
"In these times, there is no longer room for prohibitionist policies. We are the Mexico of freedoms, and the people are aware of this ," he emphasized in an interview after inaugurating the exhibition "Cannabis, Beyond the Recreational," installed in the Patio del Federalismo (Federalism Patio) of the Senate headquarters in Reforma, in the Upper House.
Sánchez Cordero expressed confidence that the current legislature will consolidate the changes necessary to take advantage of marijuana derivatives. He noted that this reform goes far beyond recreational cannabis use .
"Everyone is focused on the recreational aspect, but no, there's the medicinal aspect, there's the exponential use we can make of hemp , and there are many other things we can achieve with this regulation(...)"
The former Secretary of the Interior added that she will insist on the approval of this legislation, which is pending in the Senate , through a bill that is accompanied "with a vision of human rights and, above all, also with a vision of social justice that is far above commercialization."
The law, he emphasized, must adapt to collective needs and "must do so with flexibility, relevance , and adherence to a broad, multidisciplinary vision. We must have an open mind to see the changes that society presents to us every day."
Regarding the failed attempt to pass a law on the subject in the past two years, Sánchez Cordero said the prohibitionist policy imposed nullified any research and innovation related to marijuana , for example, the use of hemp, and generated two negative consequences.
