Mexico City. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo questioned the fact that, despite her government's openness to dialogue, "there are hooded individuals breaking down the doors of the Government Office, and yesterday they burned down the offices (of the National Union of Education Workers, SNTE)." She insisted that the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) disassociate themselves "or assume responsibility for what happened." Following yesterday's events, she said the corresponding complaints have already been filed.
She emphasized: "There is no indifference on our part. They want us to fall into provocation, we will not fall into it; that's where the supposed extremes come together," she stated, expressing her rejection of acts of violence and the effects this causes. When asked directly, she said she has not had contact with the leaders of the teachers' movement.
She considered that "if what they want is popular support for their requests, their demands, then that's not exactly the way to do it. On the contrary, what they receive is a lack of support in the face of behavior like this," the burning of the SNTE offices.
The president indicated that she has never agreed with violence. "Demonstrations should be peaceful, and if not, there must be a clear line of denial or they must assume responsibility for what happened."
"Who set the fire?" she asked. "Of course there are the corresponding complaints and whatever is appropriate, but we don't agree with these forms of demonstration." She said that the SNTE has the right to file complaints.
She pointed out that instead of support, they lose it for these types of behaviors, in addition to the burning of the SNTE offices, such as what happened when they surrounded the National Palace and tried to prevent the morning press conference, which they failed to achieve, "beating fellow reporters. It's provocation, that's how we see it."
He asked to wait until the CNTE's deliberations conclude and "there are clear boundaries. Actions of this type cannot be justified."
He indicated that a proposal had already been made, and that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and the head of Public Education, Mario Delgado, "had a conversation, and at the moment there was a negotiating table with the leaders they had chosen, there was a provocation outside the Interior Ministry. That's how things are," he questioned.
