Unifying reforms that guarantee animal welfare is urgent: Alejandro Armenta

Morena Senator Alejandro Armenta asserted that it is essential to promote laws and public policies that protect animals and preserve and restore ecological balance.

Therefore, the president of the Constitutional Affairs Committee also indicated that this legislative body will address reforms aimed at empowering Congress to enact laws establishing coordination between the federal government, state governments, municipalities, and Mexico City mayors' offices on these issues.

In an interview, he mentioned that he will call a meeting with the legislators who make up the Commission next week to address priority issues such as the bill amending Section XXIX-G of Article 73 of the Constitution, regarding animal welfare.

He emphasized the need to further promote dog and cat sterilization campaigns, which have been implemented for several years in Puebla and aim to protect pet rights and foster respect for animal life.

He mentioned that in 1981, the first Animal Protection Law was passed in the then Federal District, which addressed such broad issues as environmental protection, the protection and regulation of life and the natural growth of non-harmful species, the eradication and punishment of mistreatment and acts of cruelty toward animals, and the development of individuals by instilling responsible and humanitarian attitudes toward animals.

Alejandro Armenta added that since then, 14 state animal protection laws have been passed , meaning that approximately 50 percent of the country still lacks this type of legislation.
