Baltimore, March 26. The U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland State Police, and the Baltimore Fire Department announced they will suspend rescue efforts for the six people missing in the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and will begin recovery efforts early tomorrow.
Authorities said the frigid temperatures of the Patapsco River, into which the six individuals who were part of a construction crew carrying out repairs on the bridge fell, make their survival virtually impossible .
The bridge collapsed when the container ship "Dali" collided with it after suffering an electrical failure in the early hours of Tuesday.
No one on the boat was injured, but vehicles and people on the structure fell into the river. Seven people were initially reported missing and two rescued, one of them in serious condition . Hours later, another individual was found alive.
In a brief statement from the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay for the reconstruction of the bridge , which opened to traffic in March 1977.
The Mexican Consulate in Washington confirmed that Mexican citizens were among the victims of this incident.
"Six workers are missing, including Mexicans, Guatemalans, and Salvadorans," the consulate said on social media.
