Mexico City. This Friday, CCH Sur authorities and the student community signed agreements fulfilling the list of demands submitted by students on September 23 to the Rector's Office of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). These demands include security measures at the school and mental health care for young people.
At the conclusion of the third roundtable discussion between administrators and students today, the high school principal, Susana Lira de Garay, signed the document, which commits the authorities to carry out a series of actions demanded by the students.
The agreement signed by both parties consists of six points, the first of which is the conduct of a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the student, who was killed with a knife on September 22 by another young man, who also wounded a worker before attempting suicide.
The second point concerns the implementation of a "comprehensive security plan" that includes the review and updating of current security protocols; training for security guards, teachers, and students on emergency and first aid issues; an increase in security personnel; and the installation and improvement of surveillance cameras and alarm buttons.
"Measures will be implemented to strengthen security with security personnel and supervision systems to ensure a safe campus, such as a metal detector, hand-held metal detectors, ID card code readers, which in the first phase can be used randomly, and ID badges," stated the students participating in the meeting, reading the agreement.
These security measures, they added, will be applied at the main entrance and parking lot. In addition, a committee of students and staff will review the proper functioning of the security cameras and panic buttons monthly. The number of fire extinguishers and first aid kits will also be reviewed, and turnstiles with biometric identification systems will be installed within approximately two and a half months.
The third point relates to the implementation of programs and workshops on violence prevention and the promotion of environments of respect and peace, with a human rights and gender perspective. The fourth point is related to the launch of emergency programs providing psychological and emotional support to young people who require it.
The petition also establishes effective communication channels between administrators, students, and parents, including email and WhatsApp messages, and the establishment of a hotline for anonymous reporting of risky behavior.
