Celaya, December 5. Five medical students at the Universidad Latina de México were executed and their bodies found inside an abandoned car near the University of Guanajuato (UG) Celaya-Salvatierra campus.
The students were identified as Fabián and Virgilio Orozco Mateos, both brothers, as well as their cousin Pedro Mateos Puente— sons and nephews of the former head of the DIF and former PAN councilor of the municipality, Fabiola Mateos Chavolla , and former mayor Virgilio Orozco Galindo—as well as José Eduardo Freire Ortega and Brayan Amoles Gasta. The body of another young man was also found in that area, but his identity is unknown.
The bodies of the university students were found Sunday night on a road in the Primera Fracción de Crespo neighborhood, where the UG facilities are located, in the municipality of Celaya.
According to the first version, the young men were enrolled at UG, but the university denied this.
He reported that academic activities were suspended yesterday "as a sign of mourning, in solidarity with the parents, and to accompany them during this time of immense pain."
Lemus Muñoz Ledo called a press conference in which he reiterated his condolences to the families of the deceased youths.
"We call on our university community, on Celaya society, to continue building a new society, to seek social justice through peace. These were talented students who were scheduled to graduate on January 17, 2024 ," he explained.
