San Cristóbal de Las Casas, December 10.- The number of migrants killed in the accident that occurred this Thursday on the Chiapa de Corzo-Tuxtla Gutiérrez highway has increased to 55, reported the Secretary of Civil Protection of Chiapas, Luis García Moreno.
In an interview, he added that at 5:00 a.m. this Friday, a Guatemalan man who was being treated at the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) hospital in the state capital died.
He noted that at around 9:00 a.m., "the coordination meeting of all federal and state authorities concluded, and the instructions are to continue supporting the injured, providing them with medical attention, providing information to families through the Foreign Ministry and consulates, as well as the repatriation of those who so wish and the transfer of bodies to their countries of origin."
He commented that federal and state authorities "are waiting for the relatives to arrive to identify the bodies and complete everything that the forensic process entails."
The Chiapas Civil Protection Secretariat reported that 166 migrants were traveling in the trailer that crashed, the vast majority of whom were from Guatemala.
In a report, he added that the group also included several Hondurans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, and Ecuadorians; 19 minors were traveling: 18 from Guatemala and one from Honduras.
As of Friday morning, 55 migrants had died and 104 were injured and are being treated at the Dr. Jesús Gilberto Gómez Maza hospital, Vida Mejor hospital of the Chiapas State Workers' Social Security Institute (ISSTECH), Belisario Domínguez hospital of the State Workers' Social Security and Services Institute (ISSSTE), General Hospital of Zone No. 2 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Basic Community Hospital of Chiapa de Corzo, Basic Community Hospital of Berriozábal, and the Red Cross of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
