The Supreme Court's ruling on abortion must be respected, says López Obrador.

 

Mexico City, September 8.—The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation's (SCJN) ruling on abortion must be respected; we must uphold the law, affirmed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Yesterday, after his morning press conference, the president was scheduled to have breakfast at the National Palace with the president of the Supreme Court, Arturo Záldivar, and the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López.

But today the president said he only showed up to tell them they were "staying home" because he was going on a flyover in the Tula region to care for the affected population.

He did not previously address the issue with the president of the SCJN.

For this reason, he did not speak with either of these individuals, much less did he discuss the decision that the Superior Chamber of the Supreme Court would later make.

I didn't have time to discuss anything. I told them I had to go to Tula. I didn't mention it. I think this decision by the Judiciary was practically unanimous and should be respected. In my case, we shouldn't take sides because there are conflicting opinions. I shouldn't comment on this one."

The president reiterated that it was a decision by the Supreme Court of Justice, "we must respect the law, and I must comply."
